Check out this write-up from ICMA Student Chapter President, Brandon Ford, about the APMM Fall Managers Meeting! Great work, Villanova ICMA!!
On October 30th 2015, the Association for Pennsylvania Municipal Management (APMM) held its annual Fall Managers Meeting at the Upper Merion Township Building. Several members of the Villanova’s Unitas Student Chapter of ICMA (Jaime Snyder, Christian Jones, Da’Vine Johnson, & Christian Slater) and I were lucky enough to have opportunity to attend the meeting with Dr. Wheeland, our chapter’s advisor. The meeting featured three panels covering the topics of grant funding opportunities, the solicitor/manager relationship, and misconduct investigations & discipline essentials for municipal police departments. Each panel consisted of distinguished speakers from across the public service spectrum, including municipal managers, solicitors, and staff from the PA Governor’s Center for Local Government Services.
The APMM Fall Managers Meeting was an exceptional chance to learn more about the field of municipal management from practitioners in the field. Don’t get me wrong, the MPA program at Villanova is fantastic and provides a great foundation for aspiring managers, but nothing beats engaging with and learning from those in the field! Villanova students, myself included, had many opportunities throughout the day to interact with managers and administrators from across the state. The fact that many of the professionals in attendance were Villanova alumni made a great learning experience even better, as we were able to learn firsthand from their experiences with the MPA program, their transition from student to practitioner, and about many of the issues they face on a daily basis.
P.S. – Villanova’s Unitas Student Chapter of ICMA is always looking for new members. Membership is FREE and open to ANY student (grads and undergrads) interested in public service. If interested in joining, contact Dr. Wheeland at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also visit their website for more information.
