Ann Riddle, Graduate Assistant

From a young age, Ann Riddle has been interested in political work. She received her Bachelor’s in Political Science from Hiram College. Ann received her Master’s in Political Science at Villanova just before starting the MPA program. Ann is graduating with certificates in Nonprofit and City Management, so she feels prepared to work in both fields. Dr. Miltenberger’s Public Policy course helped her focus on what she wants to do after graduation because of the knowledge she gained about improving government. After graduating in the spring, Ann plans to move to Washington D.C. to work in public policy. She is passionate about promoting social equality by reforming policy in topics such as homelessness and gender equality. Rachel Flores-Stoddard interviewed Ann for this spotlight.

What motivated you to pursue an MPA at Villanova?

Ann enjoys the professors in the MPA program because they care about their students. She also appreciates the practicality of the program because after learning how to do things such as write memos and press releases, she feels more prepared to work for organizations in public service.

How long have you been in the MPA program?

Ann started taking MPA classes in the Fall of 2016, but joined the program in Fall 2018. This is her last semester!

What do you think is the most valuable aspect of Villanova’s MPA program?

The program is valuable because of professors’ commitment to their students. A lot of thought goes into their assignments, course work, and required readings. They will often revise the course or add new books to enhance the class; they are truly committed to helping students be their best and succeed.

What is your favorite course so far, and why?

Ann’s favorite course is Public Administration Theory with Dr. Gadson. The themes taught in that class are important for administrators to know and understand. When she was attending this class, Ann said that everything clicked. She understood how subjects in other courses all come together to help the students become public administrators.

Which professor are you working with as a tuition scholar and what project are you working on with your professor?

Ann started working with Dr. Lauren Miltenberger last year and has continued that work along with serving in the Department of Public Administration. Dr. Miltenberger and Ann are researching hiring and retention in the nonprofit sector. The team is currently putting together a survey to email to organizations. Ann exclaimed that, “Lauren is a joy to work with!” Ann is inspired by Dr. Miltenberger’s example of persistence, and Ann has learned how to overcome obstacles while working with Dr. Miltenberger.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

Hilary Clinton mentioned Ann in her 2008 Presidential Campaign Concession Speech because at the age of 13, Ann gave up her Disney World vacation funds to follow Clinton’s campaign trail.

What advice do you have for current and new MPA students?

Go to events to learn and make connections! Students should follow up on those connections because doing so can be helpful in finding jobs and internships. Also, students should reflect on theories from class and how they apply to the real world.
